Buffalo Grove house fire 2-3-11
On Thursday evening, Buffalo Grove responded to a call reporting smoke coming from a residence at 21 Chestnut Terrace. When the first fire units arrived, the front of the house was almost entirely masked by thick smoke, prompting the dispatch to upgrade the alarm to a Code 4 for an active house fire. Firefighters quickly located flames in a second-floor bedroom that had spread into the attic. They managed to control the situation relatively swiftly. However, access to the back of the property was severely restricted due to massive snowdrifts, some reaching four to five feet high, making it impossible to navigate. Luckily, no one in the family sustained any injuries. Assistance came from neighboring departments including Arlington Heights, Countryside, Lincolnshire-Riverwoods, and Deerfield. It’s worth noting that the Buffalo Grove firefighters who were already out clearing fire hydrants throughout the village had actually been on the streets earlier that day.

Attached are several images captured by Larry Shapiro during the incident:

*Buffalo Grove Quint 27 extended their main hose to reach the roof for ventilation.*

*The crew from Truck 25 ascended to the roof to ventilate the attic space.*

*Squad 26 (246) provided essential scene lighting and an air bottle refill station.*

*The quint managed to secure a water source by accessing a hydrant in the nearby cul-de-sac.*

*This hydrant was dug out from the snow accumulation, allowing for easier access.*

*A hydrant down the street from the fire site that had been cleared earlier in the day.*
Larry Shapiro has put together a comprehensive gallery of photos from the scene, which you can view [here](gallery-link). This event serves as a reminder of how challenging conditions can become during winter emergencies, and the importance of having well-trained emergency responders ready to act swiftly.
