This message comes from Larry Shapiro: So, I got there Saturday afternoon before any fire trucks arrived. It was supposed to be an emergency involving a rollover and someone trapped, but when I got there, it was just a single-car accident with no one actually stuck. The car involved was a Lexus SUV, and it had taken quite a beating. There were two people inside—well, one was already outside the vehicle, and the other had run off about a block away before getting caught by the cops. Both were taken to the hospital, one with basic life support and the other with advanced. Now, the reason I'm sharing these photos without involving the fire department is because of how this whole thing went down... and this nagging thought I've been having lately about whether or not it was just "not their time." Here's what happened: The car swerved off the road, hit a utility pole lightly, and then smacked into a metal fence post. After that, it flipped over, squishing two sections of wooden fence. Two 4x4 posts ended up going straight through the windshield—thankfully, they missed both passengers by just a hair. [Attached are several photos showing the aftermath of the crash. In one, you can see the SUV lying on its wheels after flipping over. Another shows the detached driver’s side wheel. There are also close-ups of the windshield with the wooden posts sticking out, along with an interior shot where one post penetrated the dashboard, narrowly avoiding the driver.] A few inches in either direction, and things could’ve turned out way worse. If you want to check out more pictures, they're available on shapirophotography.net. I keep thinking about how lucky they were, considering how close it was to becoming a tragedy. It makes me wonder sometimes—how much of survival is skill, and how much is just plain old fate?
