Oak Park buys tower ladder
Dan McInerney shared some details about the new tower ladder that Oak Park is acquiring. The Oak Park Fire Department (OPFD) has decided to purchase a new vehicle, opting for a model from E-One. They chose a 95-foot platform mounted on a low-profile chassis. This design was necessary because of several viaducts with limited clearance. Additionally, the department is reintroducing a truck without a pump. The primary reasons for this decision include reducing costs and complexity, increasing storage capacity, and addressing recent ISO ratings indicating that an aerial ladder with a pump is no longer essential for their needs. The new configuration will significantly increase the storage space, doubling or even surpassing what they currently have.
E-One managed to meet the height constraints by lowering the ladder's height when it’s stowed. If you examine the drawings and images carefully, you’ll notice that the cab remains a standard-sized Cyclone, but the waterway is integrated into a cutout in the roof of the cab. There is roughly 4 to 5 inches of empty space above the roof where insulation, wiring, and other components like radios will fit. A significant concern was the loss of forward visibility with other low-profile designs. Three other companies—Rosenbauer, Ferrara, and Spartan ERV—all faced similar visibility issues with their low-profile models.
Another point of discussion involved the 95-foot model potentially losing a few feet of vertical reach compared to their current equipment. However, these concerns were mitigated when comparing an E-One 95-foot model to a 100-foot one. The 100-foot model has a wider outrigger spread, and overall, they would lose just over two feet of reach if both were positioned in the same location.
E-One sent us an image of a low-profile 100-foot ladder for another customer, though I’ve forgotten the name of the agency. Our vehicle will also lack a pump and feature roll-up doors throughout, except in the area over the rear dual axles where such a door would be impractical. In this picture, you can clearly see how the bottom of the platform impacts only the upper part of the forward visibility.
