2-Alarm building fire in Northbrook 7-1-13
At approximately 6 PM on Monday evening, the Northbrook Fire Department responded to a report of a fire in a third-floor apartment located behind Station 11 at 620 Ballantree Drive. Initial reports from the police suggested that the issue might be related to a barbecue grill on a deck, but firefighters quickly discovered flames inside the third-floor unit. The emergency was escalated to a Code 4 for an active fire, prompting multiple units to enter the building. As crews moved inside, conditions worsened rapidly, necessitating an evacuation order. Heavy smoke began billowing out of the structure as it flashed over, leading to a MABAS Box Alarm being called in, and the firefighting effort transitioned to a more defensive strategy.
The initial response included Northbrook Engines 11 and 10, Ambulance 11, Battalion 11, Tower 12, and Glencoe Engine 30. When the Code 4 was issued, Lincolnshire-Riverwoods Ambulance 52 and Northfield Truck 29 joined the scene. Shortly thereafter, the box alarm brought additional resources such as Glenview Truck 14, Wheeling Engine 42, Winnetka Engine 28, Prospect Heights Squad 9, and Highland Park Quint 33, along with backup companies for relief.
A second alarm was requested not long after the box alarm activation, bringing in reinforcements like Highwood Truck 37, Deerfield Engine 20, Morton Grove Squad 4, Lincolnshire-Riverwoods Truck 53, the Division Communication Van, and several chief officers.
The building featured a mansard roof, which concealed a significant amount of fire and required extensive ventilation efforts to fully extinguish the blaze. Firefighters utilized deck guns from Engines 11 and 32, while elevated master streams were deployed by Tower 12 and Truck 14. At least three hand lines were also in operation.
Tim Olk arrived with the first responding units, followed by Larry Shapiro after the box alarm was activated. Both photographers captured numerous images, and Larry also recorded a video. Here are some of the photos submitted:
