2-Alarm building fire in Northbrook 7-1-13
The Northbrook Fire Department responded to a fire call around 6 PM on Monday evening at a third-floor apartment located behind Station 11 on 620 Ballantree Drive. Initially, reports from police suggested that the issue might involve a barbecue grill on a deck. However, once firefighters entered the premises, they quickly discovered flames spreading inside the unit. The situation escalated rapidly, prompting the fire department to upgrade the response level to Code 4 for an active fire. Multiple units were deployed into the building. Shortly after their entry, conditions worsened significantly, leading to an evacuation order being issued. As the fire intensified, heavy smoke billowed out of the building, forcing firefighters to adopt a defensive strategy. A MABAS Box Alarm was activated to summon additional resources.
When the initial alarms sounded, Northbrook Engines 11 and 10, Ambulance 11, Battalion 11, Tower 12, and Glencoe Engine 30 were among the first responders. Following the Code 4 activation, Lincolnshire-Riverwoods Ambulance 52 and Northfield Truck 29 joined the efforts. Later, the box alarm brought in reinforcements including Glenview Truck 14, Wheeling Engine 42, Winnetka Engine 28, Prospect Heights Squad 9, and Highland Park Quint 33, along with other units needed for support.
A second alarm was called not long after the box alarm, bringing in additional resources such as Highwood Truck 37, Deerfield Engine 20, Morton Grove Squad 4, Lincolnshire-Riverwoods Truck 53, the Division Comm Van, and several chief officers.
The building’s mansard roof complicated firefighting efforts, as it concealed much of the fire and necessitated extensive ventilation to fully extinguish the blaze. Firefighters utilized various strategies, including deck guns operated by Engines 11 and 32, elevated master streams from Tower 12 and Truck 14, and multiple hand lines. Tim Olk arrived alongside the first-due companies, while Larry Shapiro joined later during the box alarm deployment. Both photographers captured numerous images, and Larry also recorded a video.
