Large mulch fire in McCook, 12-28-13

The McCook Fire Department has been battling a large mulch pile fire since 8:00 AM at 5300 Lawndale. The fire is located on the backside of a massive mulch heap, where access is limited, making it difficult for firefighters to reach the source directly. Throughout much of the day, crews relied on a tanker shuttle system to transport water to the scene. Late this afternoon, the department released the tankers and called in additional resources from Chicago, including a hose wagon (6-1-2) and a turret wagon (6-7-6). This marks the first known deployment of the new 6-7-6 unit, which is now actively working the fire. The arrival of these specialized units is expected to help control the blaze more effectively. Several local contributors have been at the scene, capturing images that have already been shared by Josh Boyajian and Tim Olk. More photos are anticipated later tonight as the operation continues. Given the size of the fire and the challenges involved, this is expected to be an extended incident requiring sustained efforts from multiple departments.
