The McCook Fire Department has been battling a large mulch pile fire since 8:00 AM at 5300 Lawndale. For much of the day, crews relied on a tanker shuttle to supply water due to the lack of nearby hydrants. The fire is burning on the backside of a massive mulch heap, making direct access difficult and limiting firefighting efforts.
Late this afternoon, the department released the tankers and called for additional resources from Chicago, including a hose wagon (6-1-2) and a turret wagon (6-7-6). The new 6-7-6 unit has arrived on scene, marking its first deployment. This is a significant move as it brings more advanced equipment to tackle the ongoing situation.
