New (used) heavy rescue with crane for Newport FPD

Bill Friedrich recently informed us that the Newport FPD located in Lake County has acquired a 1985 Mack MR/Saulsbury heavy rescue vehicle. This particular rig comes complete with a mid-ship-mounted 8-ton, 33-foot National Crane and was originally from the Lutherville Volunteer Fire Company in Baltimore County, Maryland. Although the truck hasn’t made its way to Illinois just yet, word is that it’s on its way. The apparatus from Lutherville features a classic white paint job with gold striping and a black band running along the bottom. Interestingly enough, Lutherville replaced this squad back in 2008 with a more modern Pierce Velocity, featuring a tandem-axle design and another walk-around heavy rescue setup, this time equipped with a 10-ton National Crane. Looking back at Lutherville’s history, their old Squad 303 was quite the workhorse. It served them well until they decided to upgrade to the newer model. The original Mack MR/Saulsbury was a reliable piece of equipment that could handle everything from rescues to stabilizing vehicles in precarious situations. As you can see from the photos, Squad 303 had a unique ability to use its crane to lift or stabilize vehicles during emergency responses, showcasing its versatility and strength. In 2008, Lutherville transitioned to a more contemporary Pierce Velocity heavy rescue. This newer rig still boasts a mid-ship-mounted crane, but this time it's a beefier 10-ton National Crane. The change marked a significant upgrade for the department, offering improved capabilities and reliability. The Pierce Velocity stands out with its sleek design and enhanced performance features, ensuring that Lutherville remains prepared for any emergency scenario. These changes highlight how firefighting and rescue operations evolve over time. While the older Mack MR/Saulsbury was a testament to its era, the new Pierce Velocity represents the future of fire and rescue technology. Both vehicles have played crucial roles in serving their communities, each in its own distinct way. Whether it's lifting cars or stabilizing structures, these rigs have been indispensable assets for their respective departments.
