New fire chief in Mount Prospect

From the pages of Journal-Topics.com: Brian Lambel, the current Deputy Fire Chief of Mount Prospect, is set to step into the role of interim fire chief starting October 1st. This change comes as Fire Chief John Malcolm prepares to retire on October 9th, moving on to take a similar position in Lake Zurich, a northwest suburb. According to Acting Village Manager David Strahl, Mount Prospect plans to assess Lambel's performance during his interim tenure to determine if he should continue leading the department permanently. With Lambel's promotion, Lieutenant John Dolan will also be elevated to the role of interim deputy chief. Dolan, who has served the department for nearly two decades, will assume his new responsibilities the week of October 5th. Both Lambel and Malcolm have been working closely to ensure a seamless transition between their tenures. Looking ahead, this year is shaping up to be quite busy for the Mount Prospect Fire Department. They are currently recruiting six new firefighters under a SAFER grant initiative, which will enable Engine 13 at the downtown station to resume operations. Additionally, they are undergoing a lieutenant promotion process to further strengthen their team. In a recent meeting, Lambel and Dolan outlined fresh objectives and developed a strategic plan for the department. "Training and education will be a top priority," Lambel stated. "We want to empower our staff by giving them more responsibilities and fostering greater accountability." Another key focus area identified by Lambel is the department's community risk reduction program. This program aims to understand the specific needs of the community and develop strategies to minimize potential harm to both residents and businesses. Other areas of emphasis include revisiting operational procedures, ensuring a robust succession plan, and preparing for future challenges by setting both short-term and long-term goals that adapt to the evolving nature of firefighting services. A farewell event for Malcolm is scheduled for October 9th at Fire Station 13 on Northwest Highway. Furthermore, a tribute honoring Malcolm's years of dedicated service is anticipated to be presented at the village board meeting on October 6th. As the community bids farewell to Malcolm, it looks forward to seeing how Lambel will steer the department into its next chapter.
