New (used) heavy rescue with crane for Newport FPD

Bill Friedrich recently informed us that the Newport FPD in Lake County acquired a 1985 Mack MR/Saulsbury heavy rescue truck. This particular rig features a walk-in design and comes equipped with a mid-ship-mounted, 8-ton, 33-foot National Crane. It was originally purchased from the Lutherville Volunteer Fire Company in Baltimore County, Maryland. Although the vehicle hasn't yet made its way to Illinois, it's expected to arrive soon. The Lutherville apparatus fleet is known for its distinctive color scheme—white bodies adorned with gold striping and a black band along the bottom. In 2008, Lutherville replaced this squad with a newer model—a tandem-axle Pierce Velocity walk-around heavy rescue featuring a 10-ton National Crane. I had the chance to review some photos taken by Larry Shapiro. One image shows the iconic 1985 Mack MR/Saulsbury heavy rescue, which served as Lutherville's Squad 303 until its retirement. Another captures the capabilities of the crane in action, demonstrating how it can stabilize or lift vehicles during an extrication. A third photo highlights the replacement vehicle, the Pierce Velocity, which now serves as Lutherville's primary heavy rescue. This newer rig maintains the same mid-ship-mounted crane configuration but boasts improved capacity and modern design elements. Reflecting on these changes, it’s clear that Lutherville has prioritized enhancing their response capabilities while preserving tradition. The transition from the classic Mack to the contemporary Pierce Velocity reflects not only advancements in firefighting technology but also the evolving needs of emergency responders. As someone who has followed the evolution of firefighting equipment closely, I find it fascinating to see how these organizations adapt to new challenges while maintaining their core mission of public safety. It’s always exciting to witness such transitions firsthand, especially when they involve iconic vehicles like the Mack MR/Saulsbury and the impressive capabilities of the National Crane.
