New fire chief in Mount Prospect

Mount Prospect's Deputy Fire Chief Brian Lambel is set to step into the role of fire chief on an interim basis starting October 1st. This change comes as Fire Chief John Malcolm prepares to retire on October 9th. Malcolm is moving on to take up the chief position in nearby Lake Zurich.
In anticipation of this transition, Acting Village Manager David Strahl has announced that Mount Prospect will assess Lambel’s performance during his interim term to determine if he should continue in the role permanently. Lambel, who has spent nearly 16 years with the department and was promoted to deputy chief just a few months ago in June, is ready to lead the team.
Meanwhile, Lieutenant John Dolan, with 19 years of experience in the department, is being considered for a temporary promotion to deputy chief, following Lambel's ascension. Dolan will begin his new duties the week of October 5th.
Both Lambel and Malcolm have been working closely to ensure a seamless handover. Lambel mentioned that the remainder of 2015 will be particularly busy for the department, as they work on expanding their firefighting capabilities. They're currently recruiting six new firefighters under a SAFER grant, which aims to reintroduce Engine 13 at the downtown station. Additionally, they’re conducting a lieutenant promotion process to fill key positions within the department.
Lambel and Dolan have crafted a fresh set of objectives and a strategic plan for the fire department. Training and employee empowerment will be central to their efforts, aiming to enhance skills and accountability across the board. Another focus area is reviewing and refining the community risk reduction program, which plays a crucial role in addressing community needs and minimizing potential risks.
Looking ahead, the department plans to revisit operational procedures, establish clear succession plans, and align themselves with both short-term and long-term goals to adapt to the evolving landscape of fire services.
A farewell celebration for Malcolm is scheduled for October 9th at Fire Station 13 on Northwest Highway. The village board meeting on October 6th will also include a special tribute recognizing Malcolm’s many years of dedicated service.
