Toyota Tundra Maintenance – Change Oil and Oil Filter

Toyota Tundra Maintenance - Change Oil and Oil Filter

Performing an oil change on your Toyota Tundra is relatively simple. With some basic tools and a bit of patience, you can complete this task yourself. Follow these instructions to get started.

To begin with, make sure you have everything you’ll need before you start. This includes a safe area to work on your vehicle, appropriate tools such as an oil filter wrench and socket set, a container to catch the old oil, fresh oil, and a new oil filter. It’s also a good idea to have a pair of gloves and a rag handy to keep things clean.

Here's a step-by-step guide on changing your oil:

  1. First, locate the skid plate beneath your truck. If it’s removable, take it off. If not, no problem—this is just one less thing to worry about!
  2. Next, identify the oil filter (which may be covered by a white cap) and the oil drain plug.
  3. Remove the drain plug and allow the old oil to fully drain into a suitable container.
  4. Once all the oil has been drained, reinstall and tighten the drain plug securely.
  5. Now, use an oil filter wrench to loosen the old oil filter. Be careful when removing it, as it might still contain some residual oil.
  6. Install the new oil filter in its place, ensuring it’s properly tightened but not over-tightened.
  7. Pour the recommended amount of fresh oil into the engine using a funnel.
  8. Start the engine and let it run for a couple of minutes. Then, use the dipstick to check the oil level and ensure there are no leaks.
  9. Finally, reattach the skid plate if you removed it earlier.

Congratulations! You’ve successfully changed the oil in your Toyota Tundra.
