The 2014 Corolla will be exported from the USA to markets in Central America When the 2014 Toyota Corolla hit the showrooms, few could have predicted the global ambitions Toyota had in store for the model. Recently, Toyota announced its plans to export the U.S.-produced sedans to 18 countries across Latin America and the Caribbean in 2015. These vehicles are crafted at Toyota's facility in Tupelo, Mississippi, which has been producing Corollas since the previous generation was launched alongside other models like the Camry, Tundra, and Highlander. Jim Lentz, President and CEO of Toyota’s North American region, highlighted in a press release that, “These shipments are expected to build upon Toyota’s all-time record export of over 124,000 U.S.-assembled vehicles to 21 global markets in 2012, representing a 45% increase compared to the previous year.†While this growth showcases Toyota’s commitment to expanding its reach, it’s worth noting that the company still imports a significant portion of its vehicles sold in the U.S., with around 22% coming from overseas plants. Toyota’s decision to shift production to the U.S. is both strategic and forward-thinking. With the Japanese yen’s volatility impacting costs, moving manufacturing closer to target markets is a prudent move. Additionally, shipping cars from North America to Latin America is significantly cheaper than exporting them from Japan, making this strategy economically sound. This approach also provides a competitive edge against other manufacturers who may face higher logistics costs. In 2011, Toyota took a similar step by exporting U.S.-made Siennas to South Korea, marking the first time the minivan was shipped outside of North America. That initiative expanded Toyota’s export destinations to 19 countries. Even earlier, in 2008, Toyota began exporting the Sequoia and Tundra to Latin America and the Middle East, indicating that these regions have long been on Toyota’s radar for growth. As developing markets such as Latin America, Russia, and China continue to expand, the demand for larger vehicles like SUVs and trucks is rising. This trend presents an opportunity for Toyota to capitalize on its established U.S. manufacturing base. According to Jim Lentz, “Toyota’s U.S. manufacturing operations continue to grow as a key supplier of cars and trucks for global markets, thanks to the dedication and high-quality work of our team members here. The Export of U.S.-built Corolla sedans to Latin America and the Caribbean will further strengthen our domestic manufacturing presence.†While this strategy benefits American workers by keeping manufacturing jobs stateside, it does mean that American consumers won't directly benefit from the economic stimulus of purchasing these exported vehicles. Nevertheless, the Corolla remains a reliable and sought-after model globally, ensuring its popularity wherever it goes. Author Frank Rockwell is a passionate car enthusiast and retired auto mechanic.
