Chicago 3-11 Alarm fire 12-27-11

On Tuesday evening, a fire was reported at 2626 W. Roosevelt Road, a vacant, long building bordered by Washtenaw Avenue and the railroad tracks. Engine 107, stationed just around the corner, arrived first and reported flames on the second floor. Battalion 4 quickly escalated the response to a still and box alarm, noting the presence of a two-story, large brick warehouse. The initial firefighting efforts were defensive, with elevated master streams and a deck gun from Engine 107 deployed. Within 20 minutes, the fire was upgraded to a 2-11, and a 3-11 was requested half an hour later when no companies remained in the staging area. A Level I HazMat unit was also called in after the 3-11 was activated. Tower Ladder 5, Tower Ladder 10, and Squad 1’s Snorkel worked alongside the master streams along Roosevelt Road. About an hour into the incident, crews began entering the building to tackle remaining spot fires, and the fire was finally knocked out around 9:30 PM. Tim Olk and Larry Shapiro arrived at the scene early. Tim noted that smoke was heavy and low along Roosevelt Road, though visible flames were minimal. Despite the intensity of the fire, the photos captured more of the scene than actual flames. Larry Shapiro documented the event with a series of photographs, capturing the efforts of firefighters and the equipment involved. His gallery can be viewed [here](#). The images show Engine 107 using a deck gun, the Snorkel being repositioned, Tower Ladder 5, and various other units working together to control the blaze. Additional photos highlight the strategic positioning of engines, ladders, and command vehicles, as well as the use of light wagons and supply units to support operations. The scene was intense, but the coordinated effort helped bring the fire under control.
