Exploring the History of Fire Departments

The website currently features 128 fire departments, including the Chicago Fire Department. Most of these departments are showcased with their current station photos and images of every vehicle assigned to each station. From the beginning, the goal of the contributors has been to add historical photos to complement the modern images. Today marks a significant milestone as we launch the historic gallery for the Sauk Village Fire Department (MABAS Division 27). This gallery currently contains 18 images provided by Bill Friedrich, showing the evolution of the department’s vehicles from 1969. The photos reveal that the department’s color scheme changed from red to white and eventually to black over red. Bill is now working on scanning slides and negatives to expand this collection to other departments as well.

As the historic galleries grow, we hope to include more images from various sources, including our regular contributors. We welcome submissions from anyone who has historical materials to share. These galleries can feature posed shots, action photos, patches, old stations, fire scenes, or any other content that helps document the rich history of these departments. We encourage readers to share what they have in their collections to help enrich these galleries for the benefit of all.
