St. Charles 2nd Alarm 6/1/11
The St. Charles Fire Department responded to a second-alarm fire at Salerno’s on the Fox, a popular restaurant located at 320 N. 2nd Street, on Wednesday. The incident was reported at 5:24 p.m., with smoke visible from the back of the one-story building. Local media outlets, including the Sun-Times and the Tribune, have covered the event, with articles available [here](#) and [here](#), respectively.
Fire Chief Patrick Mullen noted that the fire originated near the gas meters, describing it as “a blow-torch†situation. No injuries were reported, and firefighters from ten local departments worked together to control the blaze, which was fueled by a ruptured natural gas line. Water was continuously applied to the stubborn flames throughout the operation.
John Tulipano arrived at the scene and captured several images of the emergency response. Among the units seen were St. Charles Engine 103, stationed at a hydrant down the street, and Geneva Truck 206, a Pierce Snorkel, positioned nearby. Geneva Engine 208, a Pierce Enforcer, also arrived on the scene, along with Elburn & Countryside Engine 302, a Spartan/Alexis top-mount, which was in staging.
Batavia’s Truck 1, a Pierce Dash tower ladder, was on standby but not deployed, while Batavia Engine 2, a 2009 Pierce Arrow XT, was also present. Additionally, the newly formed Fox River & Countryside Fire/Rescue Department sent Engine 1823, a 1992 Spartan/Alexis 1,250-GPM engine, to assist with the incident.
John has shared more photos from the scene [here](#). The fire is still under investigation, and authorities are working to determine the exact cause of the rupture that led to the blaze. Residents in the area were advised to stay alert and avoid the vicinity until the situation was fully resolved.
