Aluminum Alloy 7075 is a high-performance material widely used in aerospace and other demanding applications. It contains approximately 5.6–6.1% zinc, 2.1–2.5% magnesium, 1.2–1.6% copper, and small amounts of silicon, iron, manganese, titanium, chromium, and other elements. This alloy is available in various tempers, including 7075-0, 7075-T6, and 7075-T651, each offering different mechanical properties and suitability for specific uses.
As a zinc-based aluminum alloy, 7075 offers exceptional strength, ductility, and toughness. However, due to microsegregation, it can be more brittle than some other alloys. Despite this, it has better corrosion resistance compared to 2000-series alloys. Its combination of high strength and good fatigue resistance makes it ideal for structural components in aircraft and other high-stress environments.
The mechanical properties of 7075-T6 are particularly notable. It has an ultimate tensile strength ranging from 510 to 540 MPa (74,000 to 78,000 psi) and a yield strength of at least 430 to 480 MPa (63,000 to 69,000 psi). The elongation at break is between 5 and 11%. This temper is achieved through solution heat treatment, quenching, and artificial aging at 120°C for 24 hours, which enhances the alloy’s strength by forming fine eta and eta’ precipitates within the grains.
For 7075-T651, the properties differ slightly. It has a higher tensile strength of 570 MPa (83,000 psi) and a yield strength of 500 MPa (73,000 psi), with elongation at break between 3 and 9%. This temper involves solution heat treatment, stress relief, and aging. Stress relief is applied by stretching the material depending on its form—sheet, plate, bar, or forging—which helps reduce residual stresses and improve dimensional stability.

Its melting range is between 990°F and 1175°F (532°C to 635°C), and its specific heat capacity is 0.23 BTU/lb-°F (960 J/kg-°K) at 212°F (100°C). These characteristics make it suitable for a wide range of engineering applications where both strength and weight are critical factors.
