ChargeLab offers software support for orphaned Enel X Way EV chargers
Enel X Way has officially announced the closure of its EV charging operations in the U.S. and Canada, effective October 11, 2024. This means that all residential JuiceBox chargers will no longer function as smart devices and will revert to basic home chargers. Commercial Enel X Way chargers will also lose all functionality once the software support is discontinued.
ChargeLab, a leading provider of back-end management software for commercial EV charging networks, is now offering assistance to affected site hosts. If you're using Enel X Way chargers in the U.S. or Canada, it's crucial to contact ChargeLab immediately to explore migration options before the servers are permanently shut down.
Enel X Way first launched the JuiceBox in 2013, developed by eMotorWerks, a California-based startup. The company was acquired by Enel S.p.A., an Italian energy giant, in 2017. Over time, the brand evolved under Enel X and eventually Enel X Way. The acquisition was part of Enel’s broader strategy to expand into North America through EV charging and other clean energy solutions. However, the decision to exit the region comes as part of a strategic shift to focus on markets where Enel already has a retail electricity presence—primarily in Europe.
ChargeLab specializes in providing scalable, interoperable software solutions for managing EV charging infrastructure. Their platform supports over 100 different charger models from various manufacturers, including ABB, Eaton, EVBox, and more. Recently, they began integration testing with Enel X Way chargers after receiving early signals about the potential shutdown. They had been working closely with Enel X Way’s North American team up until the official announcement.
“We understand the urgency and the challenges faced by our customers,†said Shaun Stewart, President of ChargeLab. “We’re committed to helping them transition smoothly to a reliable and future-proof solution. If you’re using Enel X Way equipment, please reach out to us today.â€
While migrating commercial chargers can be complex, ChargeLab offers a viable path forward for site hosts looking to maintain their charging services. However, the company found that migrating residential JuiceBox units isn’t cost-effective due to technical limitations. As a result, they recommend that utilities and DERMS aggregators remove JuiceBox chargers from approved lists for programs like TOU and demand response.
Despite Enel X Way’s exit, the EV market in North America continues to grow rapidly. Companies like ChargeLab are stepping up to ensure that EV charging remains accessible, efficient, and scalable for drivers and businesses alike.
