ChargeLab offers software support for orphaned Enel X Way EV chargers
Enel X Way has officially announced the closure of its EV charging operations in the U.S. and Canada, effective October 11, 2024. This means that all residential JuiceBox chargers will no longer be smart devices and will revert to basic home charging units. Meanwhile, commercial Enel X Way chargers will lose all functionality once the software is discontinued.
In response to this sudden change, ChargeLab—a leader in backend management software for commercial EV charging networks—has launched an initiative to support affected commercial site hosts. If you're using Enel X Way chargers, it's crucial to reach out to ChargeLab as soon as possible to explore migration options before the servers are permanently shut down.
ChargeLab offers a hardware-agnostic platform designed to manage EV chargers at scale. Their solution works with over 100 charger models from various manufacturers, including ABB, Eaton, Wallbox, and more. The company has been testing integration with Enel X Way chargers in anticipation of this move and has been in communication with Enel X Way’s North American team until the announcement was made.
Shaun Stewart, President of ChargeLab, said, “We understand the frustration of receiving only 10 days’ notice before critical services are cut off. Our team is focused on helping Enel X Way customers transition smoothly to our platform. We encourage those impacted to contact us immediately.â€
While migrating to ChargeLab can be complex, especially due to firmware limitations, it provides a viable path for commercial sites to continue offering EV charging services after Enel X Way’s shutdown. However, the company has determined that migrating residential JuiceBox chargers is not cost-effective due to the technical challenges involved. As a result, they recommend that utilities and DERMS aggregators remove JuiceBox units from their approved equipment lists for programs like TOU and demand response.
Despite Enel X Way’s exit from North America, the trend of EV adoption remains strong. Companies like ChargeLab are stepping up to ensure that EV charging remains reliable, scalable, and accessible for drivers across the region.
If you’re a commercial site host using Enel X Way chargers, don’t wait—reach out to ChargeLab today to discuss your options. For more information, call (800) 636-0986 ext. 210.
