Koeppen appointed fire chief in Arlington Heights

This update comes from the Village of Arlington Heights:

Ken Koeppen Named Fire Chief of Arlington Heights

Ken Koeppen, a dedicated 34-year veteran of the Arlington Heights Fire Department, has officially been named as the new Fire Chief. The appointment was made by Village Manager Bill Dixon and took effect immediately. Koeppen had been serving as Acting Fire Chief since the retirement of former Chief Glenn Ericksen in February 2014.

Koeppen’s career with the department has been marked by steady progression and leadership. He served as Deputy Fire Chief since 2005, Fire Commander from 1998 to 2005, and Fire Lieutenant from 1995 to 1998. Before that, he worked as a firefighter/paramedic since joining the department in 1980. His long-term commitment and experience have made him a trusted and respected figure within the fire service.

In March 2014, Koeppen received the Police Department’s Lifesaver Award for his quick response during a critical incident. On December 12, 2013, Officer Michael McEvoy was shot in the face during a hostage situation. Koeppen, who was visiting family nearby, noticed flashing lights and rushed to assist. He found Officer McEvoy unconscious on the ground and provided immediate aid until emergency responders arrived.

Village Manager Bill Dixon praised Koeppen’s integrity and leadership, saying, “His ability to build strong relationships with both fire department staff and other village departments makes him an ideal leader for our fire department.”

Koeppen is the fifth full-time Fire Chief since the department transitioned from a volunteer force to a professional, paid department in 1958. Throughout his career, he has played a key role in managing operations, training personnel, overseeing emergency responses, and conducting arson investigations. He has also handled a wide range of incidents, from fires and medical emergencies to hazardous material spills.

Now leading the department, Koeppen expressed his commitment to the community. “I’ve built deep roots here, and as Fire Chief, I will always strive to deliver the highest level of service,” he said. “I’m excited about this opportunity to lead and continue providing the excellence our residents expect.”

The Arlington Heights Fire Department employs 110 people and offers comprehensive services including fire protection, emergency medical services (EMS), and rescue operations. It operates through four divisions: Administrative, Fire Suppression, Emergency Medical, and Training. With Koeppen at the helm, the department is poised to continue its mission of public safety and community support.
