Toyota Agrees with Settlement
Two days ago, on December 20th, Toyota officially announced a settlement with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). This agreement came as part of their ongoing efforts to address issues stemming from the 2005 recall crisis, which has long been a defining moment in the company’s history. Although Toyota did not admit to any violations under current safety laws, they agreed to pay a total of $32.425 million as part of the settlement.
In a statement released on their official news page, Steve St. Angelo, Toyota’s Chief Quality Officer for North America, expressed the company’s satisfaction with resolving these long-standing issues. He said:
“Toyota is pleased to have resolved these legacy issues related to the timeliness of prior recalls dating back to 2005. Over the past year, all 30,000 of our U.S. team members, along with tens of thousands of Americans at dealers and suppliers across the country, have worked tirelessly to move forward and set a new standard of responsiveness to our customers. These agreements represent an opportunity to build a more constructive relationship with NHTSA and focus even more on listening to our customers and meeting their high expectations for safe and reliable vehicles.â€
He also highlighted that Toyota's North American operations now play a stronger role in making safety decisions, and the company is taking swift action whenever concerns arise. The company has significantly improved its ability to investigate customer complaints through its rapid-response SMART evaluation process and other initiatives. Additionally, Toyota continues to enhance vehicle safety by equipping all new models sold in the U.S. with advanced features like the Star Safety System and Smart Stop Technology.
St. Angelo concluded by thanking Toyota drivers for their trust in the brand, which has helped Toyota remain America’s top-selling retail auto brand. “In keeping with the values that have always defined Toyota, we will continue to put our customers first in everything we do,†he said.
