Still & Box Alarm in Chicago, 2-4-16

I just got back from covering a fire scene here in Chicago. It happened yesterday afternoon (February 4th, 2016) at a vacant 1 ½ story wooden structure located at 6125 South Justine Street. The fire department responded quickly, but unfortunately, the flames managed to spread to neighboring buildings. One of them was empty, while the other was still occupied. By the time I arrived, the fire was already under control, and crews were starting the overhaul process. I spent some time there taking photos and talking to some of the firefighters. It was interesting to see how they handled the situation, especially since Squad 5A was temporarily out of service due to maintenance for a TV show filming. One thing that caught my attention was the use of the spare squad unit. It's not something you typically see every day, so it added an extra layer of curiosity to the scene. The firefighters were doing their best to ensure everything was safe and secure, which included venting the peaked roof with axes to release trapped smoke and gases. The cleanup effort was intense, with teams carefully checking every nook and cranny to prevent any hidden dangers. I snapped quite a few pictures throughout the process, capturing moments like the mobile command board being set up and the squad captain coordinating efforts on-site. There was also this impressive aerial shot showing a ladder truck positioned perfectly to access the affected building through the trees. If you're interested in seeing more visuals from the event, check out my website, shapirophotography.net. I’ve uploaded additional images there. It’s always fascinating to document these incidents because they provide insight into the hard work and dedication of our local fire departments. Let me know if you have any questions about the photos or the incident itself!
