Working fire in Northbrook, 7-14-14

Monday evening around 10:30, a concerned citizen reached out to the Northbrook Fire Department to report a fire in an abandoned two-story building close to the downtown train station. By the time the emergency teams arrived, flames were already visible inside the structure located at 1856 Walters Avenue. The fire alarm was immediately escalated to a Code 4 status, indicating an active fire requiring immediate attention. The initial response included Northbrook Engines 10 & 11, Squad 12, Tower 12, Ambulance 10, and Battalion 11, along with Glenview Truck 14. As the situation unfolded, additional support came from Deerfield Truck 20, Highland Park Squad 34, Lincolnshire-Riverwoods Ambulance 52, and Wheeling Engine 42. The firefighters worked swiftly, first extinguishing the main body of fire from the exterior before moving inside to ensure there were no extensions or trapped occupants. After the immediate threat was under control, a Box Alarm was requested to bring in relief crews, as units were tied up at the scene for some time. Throughout the operation, Tim Olk and Larry Shapiro were present, capturing several powerful images that vividly depict the intense firefighting efforts. As I scrolled through the photos, it was clear how challenging yet coordinated the efforts were. In one image by Tim Olk, firefighters wielding hoses were seen aggressively attacking the blaze in a darkened building, their determination evident even in the shadows. Another photo showcased a different angle, highlighting the teamwork as they methodically moved through the structure, searching every corner for any remaining threats. Larry Shapiro’s contributions were equally impressive. His photos captured everything from firefighters connecting hoses to hydrants under the dim glow of streetlights to the imposing presence of aerial ladder trucks positioned strategically to reach upper floors. One particularly striking image showed a Pierce fire truck illuminated against the night sky, its lights cutting through the darkness like beacons of hope and resilience. What struck me most was the sense of unity among these professionals. Despite the late hour and the daunting nature of the task at hand, there was a palpable camaraderie among the teams. Each firefighter seemed fully committed to the mission, whether it was extinguishing flames, securing the perimeter, or providing medical assistance if needed. This incident once again highlights the critical role our local fire departments play in ensuring community safety. It’s moments like these that remind us of the dedication and bravery of those who put themselves on the line every day. My heartfelt thanks go out to everyone involved—your efforts don’t go unnoticed, and your sacrifices make all the difference.
