It's a compelling story that highlights the challenges, triumphs, and emotional toll of the profession. When I reflect on my early years, I never imagined myself becoming a firefighter. Growing up, I didn't have any connections to the fire service. The only exposure I had was through a guy I knew from high school whose dad was a lieutenant. At the time, there were 35,000 applications submitted, and only a fraction of those candidates actually made it to the hiring process. So yes, the odds were against me, but I got lucky and was selected for the second round of recruits, which happened a year later. I thought I'd ease into the role, but nope—on day one, I was thrown right into action. My first few calls were absolutely nerve-wracking. It takes some time to adjust, but eventually, you settle into the rhythm of the job. Even when adrenaline spikes during emergencies, you learn to manage it and focus on performing your duties. I vividly remember my first fire. I had been on the streets for about three months and had mostly dealt with car accidents, train derailments, and medical calls. Then came the day when I finally encountered flames and thick smoke. It was intense, but I learned quickly that you have to stay calm and focused. One of the most challenging moments in my career happened in 2002 during a high-rise fire. We were on the 14th floor, and the wind was fierce. The fire spread rapidly, driven by the gusts, and we had to retreat to avoid injury. Unfortunately, I suffered second- and third-degree burns on my legs. It was a painful experience, but it also taught me valuable lessons about recognizing danger signs. After recovering, I returned to duty, and while the memory lingered, it made me more cautious and vigilant. Over the years, I've encountered countless situations—some heartening, others heartbreaking. I've saved lives, pulled people from burning buildings, and even witnessed tragic accidents involving children. It's hard not to become numb to some of these events, especially after seeing so much sorrow. But having kids of my own now makes certain situations hit closer to home. When I think about the families affected by tragedy, I can't help but relate it to my own family. Despite everything, I genuinely enjoy coming to work each day. There’s something deeply fulfilling about knowing you’re making a difference, even if it’s not always easy. If you can find joy in your work, life feels richer.
