Open House for MABAS (update)
A few photos from the MABAS Home Day Open House held last week at the readiness center warehouse in Wheeling. The event provided a great opportunity for local fire chiefs and emergency service officials to learn more about the resources available through MABAS.
The first image shows a group of area fire leaders gathered at the open house, where several presenters shared insights on various topics related to emergency preparedness and response.
Congressman Peter Roskam was in attendance and addressed the fire service personnel, highlighting the importance of strong community partnerships and support for first responders.
Another photo highlights the Mobile Field Office, a key component of the readiness center’s mission support units. This unit features slide-out sides to expand interior space and is part of a fleet of three similar units designed to support regional operations.
A sign near the unit explains its role as the MSU-North, or Mission Support Unit for the northern region. These units play a vital role in ensuring rapid response capabilities during emergencies.
The newest addition to MABAS’s specialized equipment is this large Oshkosh P-15 crash truck, which was surplus from the Air Force. It's one of the largest crash trucks ever built, carrying 6,000 gallons of water and 600 gallons of AFFF. Equipped with two 1,500-GPM pumps and two turrets rated at 1,250-GPM each, it remains in storage for now, with its future use still being determined.
The warehouse also houses Illinois Task Force 1 (ILTF-1), the state’s Urban Search & Rescue team. IL-US&R TF-1 is an essential asset for MABAS-IL and provides critical support during disasters. One side of the facility is dedicated to housing the team’s equipment and supplies.
Among the latest additions to the US&R team is a flatbed roll-off truck for transporting lumber, enhancing the team’s ability to assist in structural rescue operations.
Overall, the event showcased the important work being done at the MABAS Readiness Center and highlighted the commitment of local leaders and emergency services to preparedness and public safety.
