Domestic trucks first landed in Korea market
It has been reported that Daewoo Automobile Marketing Co., Ltd. is set to bring small and medium-sized cargo trucks weighing under 8 tons from China into the South Korean market for sale. This marks a significant milestone, as it will be the first time Chinese-made trucks enter the Korean commercial vehicle sector, drawing considerable attention from major local manufacturers such as Hyundai, Kia, and Tata Daewoo.
According to the latest update from Daewoo Automobile Marketing, they have entered into negotiations with Qingling Automobile Company, based in Chongqing, China, to import 2.5-ton cargo trucks for the South Korean market. Notably, Qingling Automobile is a joint venture with Japan’s Isuzu Corporation, which means the 2.5-ton trucks are equipped with high-quality engines and transmissions supplied by Isuzu. Known globally for its advanced engineering and reliable performance, Isuzu's technology has long been respected by both the automotive industry and consumers worldwide. As a result, the technical specifications and quality of these Chinese-manufactured trucks meet international standards.
Currently, Hyundai Motor dominates the 2.5-ton light truck segment in South Korea. However, trucks imported from China are priced between 10% and 20% lower than their Hyundai counterparts, making them a more cost-effective alternative. This competitive pricing, combined with the proven reliability of the Isuzu components, suggests strong potential for Chinese trucks to gain traction in the South Korean market.
Daewoo Automobile Marketing is expected to secure an import license from the Korean Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, and Transport in the coming months. If approved, the company plans to start importing Chinese vehicles at the beginning of next year. Should this initiative prove successful, Daewoo may expand its product range by introducing additional small and medium-sized cargo trucks from China, further diversifying its offerings in the South Korean market.
