Open House for MABAS (update)
A few photos from the MABAS Home Day Open House held last week at the readiness center warehouse in Wheeling. The event provided a great opportunity for local fire chiefs, emergency responders, and community members to learn more about the critical work being done at the facility.
The first image shows a group of area fire officials gathered during the open house. Several presenters shared insights on various topics related to emergency management and preparedness. This was a valuable chance for attendees to engage with experts and gain a better understanding of the resources available.
Congressman Peter Roskam also made an appearance, addressing the fire service personnel and offering his support for their important work. His presence highlighted the significance of the MABAS readiness center in the region.
Another photo features the Mobile Field Office, a unique unit designed to expand interior space with its slide-out sides. It's one of three such units, specifically designated as MSU-North, serving the northern region. These units play a vital role in providing flexible and efficient support during emergencies.
A sign near the unit explains its purpose, emphasizing the importance of mission support in disaster response efforts.
The newest addition to the MABAS fleet is this 8×8 Oshkosh P-15, acquired from the Air Force. Known as one of the largest crash trucks ever built, it carries a massive amount of water and firefighting foam. Despite its impressive capabilities, it is not currently in active service, and its future use is still being determined.
The warehouse is also home to Illinois Task Force 1 (ILTF-1), the state’s Urban Search and Rescue team. This team is a key asset for MABAS-IL and provides essential support during major incidents. One side of the facility is dedicated to housing their equipment and supplies.
Among the latest additions to the US&R team is a flatbed roll-off truck for transporting lumber. This new piece of equipment enhances the team’s ability to respond effectively to a wide range of emergencies.
Overall, the event offered a fascinating glimpse into the operations of the MABAS readiness center and the critical role it plays in supporting emergency services across the region.
