Berwyn boat fire 6-13-11
The Berwyn Fire Department responded to a fire in an alley on the 7000 block of 34th Street this evening. Local resident Josh Boyajian, who lives in Berwyn, shared a detailed account and photos of the incident.
"When I stepped outside, I could see a huge column of smoke rising from the scene," said Boyajian. "Berwyn fire companies arrived to find a boat fully engulfed in flames, still under construction. They immediately deployed two lines to tackle the fire. North Riverside Fire Department provided auto-aid support."
Boyajian captured several images that show the intensity of the blaze. The first photo shows a massive plume of smoke visible from a distance, highlighting how quickly the fire spread. Another image reveals the boat on a mobile trailer, already well involved before firefighters could get water on it.
Firefighters worked swiftly to contain the fire, with one line being used from Engine 903 on the street in front of the house. A second line was also deployed from Quint 901, which was on the scene as part of the response. Despite the challenging conditions, the crews managed to bring the fire under control without any reported injuries.
The cause of the fire is currently under investigation, but no structural damage was reported beyond the boat itself. This incident serves as a reminder of the importance of early detection and quick response in preventing more serious consequences.
