CGN for the first time to achieve cold cathode X-ray digital inspection daytime flaw detection
On February 10, 2019, China Guangdong Nuclear Power Testing Technology Co., Ltd. (CGNPT) and Fujian Ningde Nuclear Power Co., Ltd. successfully conducted the first daytime flaw detection using cold cathode X-ray digital imaging technology at the conventional island of the Ningde Nuclear Power Plant in Fujian. This marked a significant milestone as it was the first time this innovative technology was applied for daytime inspection in a domestic nuclear power plant, demonstrating that CGNPT's digital cold cathode X-ray technology is now mature and ready for practical use.
The cold cathode X-ray digital imaging technology, developed over three years by CGNPT, uses carbon nanomaterials as the cathode. It offers advantages such as compact size, faster detection times, and enhanced safety compared to traditional methods. Unlike conventional nighttime gamma ray detection, this new approach enables digital flaw detection during the day, improving operational efficiency and reducing risks.
The daytime inspection window took place from 12:30 PM to 1:45 PM, during which 7 welds were inspected. To ensure the smooth execution of the task, CGNPT and the Ningde Nuclear Power Technology Department conducted thorough preparations. Inspectors underwent comprehensive training, performed multiple tests, and developed detailed isolation and flaw detection plans. The project also received full support from the radiation protection teams at Ningde Nuclear Power.
This successful implementation represents another step forward in the collaboration between CGNPT and Ningde Nuclear Power Station following the adoption of digital radiography (DR) technology. It further advances the goals of digitalization, high efficiency, and improved safety in radiation detection. By expanding the application of digital radiography in the nuclear power field, this achievement enhances CGNPT’s competitive edge in non-destructive testing and paves the way for future innovations in the industry.
