CGN for the first time to achieve cold cathode X-ray digital inspection daytime flaw detection

On February 10, 2019, China Guangdong Nuclear Power Testing Technology Co., Ltd. (CGNPT) and Fujian Ningde Nuclear Power Co., Ltd. successfully conducted the first daytime flaw detection using cold cathode X-ray digital imaging technology at the conventional island of the Ningde Nuclear Power Plant in Fujian. This marked a significant milestone as it was the first time this innovative technology was applied for daytime inspection in domestic nuclear power plants, showcasing the maturity of CGNPT's digital cold cathode X-ray imaging system. The technology, developed over three years, uses carbon nanomaterials as the cathode, offering advantages such as compact size, shorter detection time, and enhanced safety. Unlike traditional nighttime gamma ray detection, this new method enables digital flaw detection during the day, significantly improving operational efficiency. It reduces the number of personnel required, minimizes isolation boundaries, lowers radiation exposure, and allows for cross-operation, ultimately shortening overhaul periods and reducing risks. The daytime flaw detection session took place from 12:30 PM to 1:45 PM, during which seven welds were inspected. To ensure a smooth implementation, CGNPT and Ningde Nuclear Power’s technical teams conducted thorough preparations. Inspectors received comprehensive training, performed multiple tests, and developed practical isolation and inspection plans. The project also received full support from radiation protection departments at Ningde Nuclear Power. This achievement represents another successful collaboration between CGNPT and Ningde Nuclear Power following the adoption of digital radiography (DR) technology. It marks an important step forward in advancing the digitalization, efficiency, and safety of radiation detection in the nuclear industry. By effectively applying and expanding the use of digital radiography in nuclear power, this breakthrough has strengthened CGNPT’s competitive edge in non-destructive testing.
