Autodesk and FOX Sports Team Up on Groundbreaking Wind Simulation Technology for Super Bowl XLVIII Broadcast
Public Company Information:
NASDAQ: ADSK
SAN FRANCISCO & NEW YORK – (BUSINESS WIRE) – The New Jersey Meadowlands, home to MetLife Stadium and the historic Super Bowl XLVIII, has long been known for its unpredictable and swirling winter winds. Now, Autodesk and FOX Sports are collaborating to give fans a first-of-its-kind visual experience of how these winds could impact the game. The innovative technology, called *FOX WEATHER TRAX*, will provide real-time visualization of airflow patterns inside the stadium during live broadcasts.
FOX Sports partnered with Autodesk, a global leader in design and engineering software, to help illustrate the challenges players might face due to unusual wind conditions. By using Autodesk’s simulation tools, the team was able to model the specific weather dynamics inside MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, NJ. This data is then used to overlay visual representations of wind direction directly onto the game footage, offering viewers an unprecedented view of the invisible forces at play.
Before this collaboration, coaches, players, and commentators had to rely on field goal flags to estimate wind effects on kicks or passes—often leaving fans confused about why a play didn’t go as planned. With this new technology, the guesswork is gone, and the viewing experience becomes more informative and engaging.
“Wind is an invisible factor that can significantly influence the outcome of a game,†said Zac Fields, Vice President of Graphics & Technology at FOX Sports. “Given the reputation of the New Jersey Meadowlands for strong winds and the importance of the Super Bowl, we needed a tool that could clearly show how wind affects the game. This technology helps our 100 million-plus viewers actually ‘see the wind’ and understand its impact.â€
Simulation technology has long been used by engineers, architects, and designers to test scenarios and improve decision-making. Now, it's making its way into the world of sports broadcasting. Autodesk’s tools allow users to simulate real-world conditions digitally, helping them visualize and analyze outcomes before any physical production takes place. It works behind the scenes, much like spellcheck in a word processor, but with far greater complexity and precision.
“Autodesk is all about empowering people to imagine, design, and create better solutions,†said Buzz Kross, Senior Vice President at Autodesk. “Whether it’s testing how a phone performs in extreme temperatures or analyzing airflow in a building, our software helps users make smarter decisions. When FOX Sports wanted to elevate the Super Bowl experience, we were ready to bring that vision to life.â€
**How It Works**
For the first time ever, fans watching from home will get an insider’s view of the wind patterns inside MetLife Stadium. Here’s how it works:
- **Step 1:** A 3D digital model of the stadium is created using advanced modeling software.
- **Step 2:** Simulation software interacts with the model, allowing users to adjust wind speed and direction based on actual game-day conditions. The system then shows how these changes affect air flow within the stadium.
- **Step 3:** The simulated wind patterns are overlaid onto live camera feeds, giving viewers a clear visual representation of wind movement in relation to the field.
