Evanston 3-11 on 3-15-11
Last week, Evanston was hit by a 2-11 alarm fire on Oak Street. The blaze broke out in a historic Victorian mansion that was in the midst of renovation, with plans to convert it into a museum dedicated to clocks and stained glass. The incident drew significant attention from local media, with detailed coverage available on TribLocal, the Tribune, and a short video posted online.
An audio recording from the scene is also available for those interested in hearing the sounds of the emergency response.
A series of compelling photos were captured by Steve Redick, who has shared a full gallery of images from the fire. One photo shows Evanston Truck 22, a Pierce TDA, operating in the 'A' sector during the response. Another image provides a panoramic view of the fire scene, offering a clear look at the intensity of the situation.
A neighbor recorded a video of the event and uploaded it to YouTube, giving viewers an on-the-ground perspective of the fire. The footage highlights the challenges firefighters faced due to heavy smoke and poor visibility.
Another image features Evanston Engine 23, the department’s newest unit, pumping water from the alley behind the burning building. Meanwhile, Truck 23, another Pierce TDA, was seen laddering an adjacent building that had to be evacuated due to the thick smoke.
From a distance, Engine 24 is visible pumping water in front of a five-story building to the south. The intense smoke from the fire created hazardous conditions for nearby structures, as seen in one of the photos. Engine 22 was stationed at a hydrant at the end of the block, while Engine 22a, a 2003 Pierce Dash with a 1,500-GPM pump, was actively engaged in the operation.
Additional units from neighboring departments, including Glenview Engine 6, Morton Grove Squad 4, and DesPlaines Tower 81, were also on scene, providing support and staging in the area. Winnetka Engine 28 was among the units in staging, having recently undergone maintenance, including a new door seal, fresh graphics, and a new black roof paint job.
