LG Chemical Reformed Benzene Recovery Unit

South Korea's LG Chemical recently revealed that it will complete the transformation of its benzene recovery unit by the end of December this year. In early 2010, it will be able to produce 70,000 tons/year of toluene at Dashan Base.

The plant currently has a capacity of 260,000 tons/year of pure benzene and 50,000 tons/year of solvent-grade mixed xylene. After the transformation, the capacity of pure benzene will be reduced to 170,000 to 180,000 tons/year, but at the same time it can produce 70,000 tons/year of toluene, and the solvent-grade mixed xylene production capacity will remain unchanged. The retrofitted device is scheduled to be commissioned by the end of December.

LG Chemical operates a hydrodealkylation plant at Dashan Base, which can produce 280,000 tons/year of pure benzene at full load. The company operates a number of aromatics plants in Yeosu, including 220,000 tons/year of pure benzene, 100,000 tons/year of toluene, and 55,000 tons/year of solvent-grade mixed xylene.
