Chicago fire with Mayday 1-22-12 injures 2
The Chicago Tribune recently published a report on a significant fire that broke out on Saturday night in the South Side of Chicago, specifically at 7925 S. Colfax. The incident led to two firefighters being injured and caused damage to three homes in the neighborhood early Sunday morning.
According to Cmdr. Sean Flynn, a spokesperson for the Chicago Fire Department, the fire was first reported around 11:45 p.m. on the 7900 block of South Colfax Avenue. During the operation, two firefighters were briefly unaccounted for due to unsafe conditions inside the structure. "We noticed unsafe conditions and started to pull people out. A couple of members got trapped upstairs, so we called mayday and pulled a 2-11," Flynn explained.
The 2-11 alarm and mayday alert brought additional firefighters and equipment to the scene. Fortunately, the two missing firefighters were located shortly after and accounted for as the team regrouped. In addition, an Emergency Medical Services Plan 1 was activated, sending five ambulances to the location.
Chief Gordon J. Nord., Jr. personally visited the scene and captured several images documenting the ongoing efforts. Among the photos are shots of firefighters working in the rear of the house, Engine 126 with multiple lines deployed in the snow, battalion chiefs monitoring the situation, and firefighters using Tower Ladder 34 to tackle hot spots in the attic.
One image shows a firefighter adjusting his SCBA after exiting the burning building, clearly visible under layers of ice. Another captures firefighters rolling up their hose lines after completing the initial attack.
