Chicago fire with Mayday 1-22-12 injures 2
The Chicago Tribune recently published an article detailing a serious fire that broke out on Saturday night on the city’s south side, specifically at 7925 S. Colfax. The incident led to two firefighters being injured and significant damage to three homes in the South Chicago neighborhood.
According to Cmdr. Sean Flynn, a spokesperson for the Chicago Fire Department, the fire was first reported around 11:45 p.m. on the 7900 block of South Colfax Avenue. During the operation, two firefighters briefly went missing, prompting a mayday call and the activation of a 2-11 alarm. This brought additional personnel and equipment to the scene to ensure the safety of all involved.
“We noticed unsafe conditions and started to pull people out. A couple of members got trapped upstairs, so we called mayday and pulled a 2-11,†Flynn explained. Fortunately, the two firefighters were soon accounted for after the team regrouped. In addition to the fire department, five ambulances from the Emergency Medical Services were also dispatched to the location.
Chief Gordon J. Nord., Jr. visited the scene and captured several photos documenting the ongoing efforts. One image shows firefighters working in the rear of a home where a mayday had been called and later resolved. Another photo features Engine 126 with multiple lines deployed in the snow. Additional shots highlight battalion chiefs monitoring the situation and firefighters using a tower ladder to tackle hot spots in the attic.
One particularly striking image shows a firefighter, covered in ice, adjusting his breathing apparatus after exiting the building. Another captures firefighters rolling up their hose lines as they begin to dismantle the attack lines.
