Restoration of Notre-Dame Cathedral in Paris Embraces Digital Technology, Building Information Modeling
The public institution responsible for the conservation and restoration of Notre-Dame de Paris has officially partnered with Autodesk. This collaboration brings together cutting-edge design and construction technologies, including Building Information Modeling (BIM), intelligent data management, and 3D geometric modeling. By leveraging BIM, the organization is creating a comprehensive digital archive of the cathedral, which will enhance its resilience and support future restoration efforts.
Through this partnership, the institution is also enabling cloud-based collaboration among all stakeholders involved in the restoration. A centralized data environment allows everyone with access to view the most up-to-date plans and information, streamlining communication and ensuring transparency throughout the process.
Before the tragic fire, Autodesk used reality capture technologies to create a detailed 3D BIM model of the cathedral as it stood. This model has since been compared with new scans taken after the fire, allowing experts to better understand the damage and plan the restoration more effectively.
A gallery of 3D models showcasing the cathedral’s structure and details is available, offering a visual representation of the restoration work in progress. These digital models are essential tools for architects, engineers, and historians working to bring Notre-Dame back to its former glory.
