Buried underground heat pump central air conditioning to create energy-efficient housing
In the absence of boiler rooms in winter and cooling towers in summer, a new technology has emerged that directly utilizes the stable temperature of underground soil and the seasonal temperature difference between the ground and subsoil for air conditioning and heating. This innovative system is now widely applied in the Binhai New Area.
Experts highlight that the buried tube ground source heat pump technology offers significant environmental, energy-saving, and economic benefits. It is also monitored by state authorities. Its energy efficiency can reach 4:1 or higher, surpassing traditional central air-conditioning systems by over 30%. The energy saving effect exceeds 50%. If 100 million square meters of buildings adopt this technology, it could save 11,900 tons of standard coal annually, reduce emissions by 130 million cubic meters, and save nearly 100 million yuan in initial investment. Additionally, it would cut annual operating costs by about 10 million yuan and significantly reduce land usage for infrastructure.
At a printing company located in the Airport Logistics Processing Zone, a 20,000-square-meter factory area lacks any visible boiler rooms or cooling towers. The indoor temperature in offices, factories, and warehouses remains consistently comfortable. According to technicians from Tianjin Cold Technology Company, the heating and cooling systems are not installed on the surface. Instead, heat exchangers are buried deep underground, up to 100 meters. The underground soil holds a rich and stable temperature resource, with an average of 16 degrees Celsius. In summer, the soil is cooler than the surface, while in winter, it is warmer. The ground source heat pump technology leverages this seasonal temperature difference, using special equipment to transfer cool underground resources into the building during summer and warm soil heat into the building during winter.
The buried ground source heat pump system operates more directly, as the heat exchanger is embedded in the soil, connected through a closed-loop water circulation system that exchanges heat with the surrounding earth. During winter, the system absorbs heat from the soil, and in summer, it releases excess heat back into the ground for storage. This process ensures no negative impact on groundwater resources. Unlike traditional systems, this technology does not use fuel oil, natural gas, or coal. It allows flexible temperature control, with automatic ventilation. Indoor temperatures typically reach 26°C in winter and 22°C in summer.
The key technical feature of the buried ground source heat pump central air-conditioning system is its use of the earth as a cold and heat source. This technology has been successfully implemented in 20 projects, including the Tianjin Bonded Holdings Building, Huiyuan Printing Co., Ltd., Toray foreign storage and transportation companies, and Manor Man King Manor, delivering excellent social and economic benefits.
