Michelin Signs Global Road Safety Commitment

On May 11, 2011, Michelin Group managing partner Jean-Dominique Senard signed the "Global Road Safety Commitment" to support the UN's "2011-2020 Decade of Road Safety Initiative" actively promoted. On the same day, the United Nations officially launched this 10-year plan on a global scale.

By signing the statement, the Michelin Group reiterated its commitment to initiate and further promote road safety.

Each year, about 1.3 million people die in road accidents around the world. If government agencies and non-government organizations cannot work together quickly, by 2030, traffic accidents will become the fifth leading cause of human death.

For more than 40 years, the Michelin Group has always been committed to the cause of road safety. Today, it further clarifies its commitment to promote safer and more sustainable mobility. For over 120 years, Michelin’s primary goal has been to provide customers with safe, reliable tire products that help them reduce fuel consumption while ensuring optimal safety performance and unsurpassed service life. In addition to focusing on tires and their performance, Michelin is also working to increase public understanding of the best road safety practices. Safety awareness education is not only carried out in its factories and sales offices, but also in its cities, regions and countries. In addition, Michelin also actively supports various international actions and initiatives, including the United Nations "Operations for Road Safety for the Decade".

Among them, Michelin has launched the “Fill Up With Air” campaign in Europe since 2003, and has recently expanded to other continents. This activity aims to educate drivers on the importance of maintaining proper tire pressure to ensure safety for themselves and other road users. In 2009, Michelin launched the European Youth Road Safety Initiative (ROSYPE). This activity aims to raise the awareness of road safety of 730,000 European young people, which is also a manifestation of Michelin's commitment to improving road safety. The ultimate goal is to improve the traffic behavior of young people at high risk for this traffic accident and adults, including Michelin employees, because one-third of traffic accidents occur during work-related travel. In addition, Michelin also strongly supports various activities initiated by the Global Road Safety Cooperation Organization (GRSP), especially the five-year pilot projects launched in China, ASEAN countries, India, and Brazil.

Jean-Dominique Senard, Managing Partner of the Michelin Group, stated that “Michelin is not only involved in innovative tire products but also participates in various social activities to meet the challenges of the road safety problems we face. Michelin respects the vivid expression of the basic values of others."

The 11th Michelin Bibiden Challenge will be held in Berlin from May 18th to 22nd, 2011. This will be another example of the Group’s commitment to sustainable mobility, and in particular to safer mobility. Being fully committed to improving the development of mobility not only means safer mobility, but also reflects clean mobility and connected mobility. At this event, more than 6,000 guests and more than 15,000 visitors will gather at the Tempelhof in Berlin to experience this grand event that embodies Michelin values.
