MIT Develops New Interface System: Human Hand Gestures to Direct Robots

According to foreign media reports, the MIT Robotics Research Laboratory has developed a new interface system that uses a system that can be connected to the brain to guide how the robot works.

The initial system is quite simple. The scalp electroencephalogram (EEG) and electromyogram (EMG) systems are connected to the Baxter working robot. When the robot does something that should not be done, people can simply wave or do other gestures to stop.

For example, the robot can still perform routine tasks such as drilling, but when it approaches an unfamiliar scene, humans can direct it by gesturing.

Joseph DelPreto, a Ph.D. student at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, said: "By looking at muscle and brain signals, we can begin to understand a person's natural posture and his hasty decisions about whether something went wrong. Helps people to communicate with robots more like human-to-human communication.”

Since MIT develops systems that use nuances such as gestures and emotional reactions, you can train robots to interact with people with disabilities, and even prevent accidents by paying attention or warnings before verbally communicating.

This allows the worker to stop the robot before it damages it, and even helps the robot to make minor changes to its mission before the mission begins.

During the test, the team trained the Baxter robot to drill holes in the aircraft fuselage. Occasionally, the task changes, and a person standing nearby can gesture to the robot before he drills a hole, allowing it to change the position of the hole. This is basically training him to complete a new task in the current task.

In this process, it does not involve human involvement in the actual operation, they just suggest that the robot moves the drill bit left and right on the fuselage. The most important thing is that humans do not need to think or train themselves to interact with machines in a special way.
