These machines take advantage of the differences in electrical conductivity between minerals within an ore feed. The high-tension roll electrostatic separator (HTR) uses a grounded roll to transport the material through a high-voltage ionizing field (corona), where particles become charged by ion bombardment. Conductive particles transfer their charge to the grounded roll and are thrown off by centrifugal and gravitational forces, while non-conductive particles remain pinned to the electrode surface. They are then transported further around the roll periphery and drop off either due to charge dissipation or mechanical means like brushes and AC wipers. This process allows for efficient separation based on electrical properties. The throughput capacity of a high-tension electrostatic separator depends on several factors, including roll speed, roll width, and the characteristics of the feed material. A smaller diameter roll requires a higher rotation speed to maintain a sufficient feed rate, but at higher RPMs, coarse non-conductive particles may leave the roll too early, leading to misplacement in the conductor stream. Conversely, under low RPM conditions, fine conductive particles may not gain enough inertia to be thrown off, resulting in errors in the non-conductor stream. Therefore, adjusting the roll speed and electrode positions is essential for optimal performance when dealing with mixed particle types that vary in conductivity, size, and density.
