China's "super needle" X-ray imaging system successfully achieved independent development

China Instrument Network Instrument Development Recently, China Electronics Branch 38 unveiled a groundbreaking non-destructive testing equipment—the “Super Needle” X-ray imaging system. This marks the first time China has developed such an advanced X-ray imaging system domestically. The system boasts an impressive imaging resolution of less than 1 micron, enabling it to detect even the smallest defects with remarkable precision.

As integrated circuits continue to evolve toward higher integration and miniaturization, advanced packaging processes have introduced new challenges for inspection technologies. On one hand, smaller package sizes demand sub-micron resolution in detection equipment, yet only a few manufacturers globally can meet this standard. On the other hand, with the increasing use of light-element materials like silicon, aluminum, copper, and ceramics in chip manufacturing, there is a growing need for more accurate detection capabilities. Therefore, X-ray inspection systems with higher resolution, better contrast, and broader detection ranges are now essential for the development of the integrated circuit packaging industry.
Micro-focus X-ray imaging systems are widely used in industrial non-destructive testing, particularly for inspecting integrated circuits and electronic components. These systems allow detailed observation of internal structures, and the performance of the X-ray source directly affects their effectiveness. The “Super Needle” is considered the theoretically optimal electron source.
In 2011, China Electronics Branch 38 first proposed the application of “Super Needle” technology in micro-focus X-ray sources. After nearly a decade of dedicated research and development, the “Super Needle” X-ray Imaging System was finally launched. To date, China Electronics 38 has filed over 30 invention patents for this product, including 12 international patents covering the U.S., Japan, and Europe.
The “Super Needle” X-ray imaging system utilizes a proprietary “Super Needle” X-ray source, which generates high-quality fluoroscopic images on the image intensifier. This cutting-edge technology, developed domestically, gives the system its name and offers advantages such as clear imaging, stable performance, high cleanliness, ultra-low radiation, and low-energy imaging.
According to officials at China Electronics 38, based on the “Super Needle” X-ray source technology, they plan to develop a series of X-ray imaging equipment tailored for various fields, including integrated circuits, military aerospace, automotive electronics, and medical diagnostics. With diversified applications, the future prospects for this technology look extremely promising.
