China's "super needle" X-ray imaging system successfully achieved independent development
[ China Instrument Network Instrument Development ] Recently, China Electronics Branch 38 unveiled a groundbreaking non-destructive testing device known as the "Super Needle" X-ray imaging system. This is the first such system developed domestically, featuring an impressive imaging resolution of less than 1 micron, allowing for highly accurate defect detection.
As integrated circuits continue to evolve toward higher integration and smaller sizes, advanced packaging techniques are pushing inspection equipment to their limits. The demand for sub-micron resolution devices has increased significantly, yet only a few manufacturers globally can meet this standard. Additionally, with the growing use of light-element materials like silicon, aluminum, copper, and ceramics in chip manufacturing, there's a rising need for more precise and broader detection capabilities. This has made high-resolution, high-contrast, and large-range X-ray inspection systems essential for the development of the integrated circuit packaging industry.
Micro-focus X-ray imaging systems are widely used in industrial non-destructive testing, particularly for inspecting components like integrated circuits and electronic devices. These systems allow detailed observation of internal structures, and the performance of the X-ray source directly influences the effectiveness of the inspection. The "Super Needle" is considered the ideal electron source in theory.
In 2011, China Electronics Branch 38 first proposed the application of the "Super Needle" technology in the development of micro-focus X-ray sources. After nearly a decade of research and development, the "Super Needle" X-ray Imaging System was finally launched. To date, the company has filed over 30 domestic and international invention patents for the product, including 12 international patents covering the US, Japan, and Europe.
The "Super Needle" X-ray imaging system utilizes a unique patented "Super Needle" X-ray source to generate fluoroscopic images on the image intensifier. This system is based on a domestically developed "Super Needle" X-ray source, which gives it its name. It offers clear imaging, stable performance, high cleanliness, ultra-low radiation, and low-energy imaging—making it a significant advancement in the field.
According to officials from China Electronics Branch 38, the "Super Needle" X-ray source technology has the potential to support the development of a wide range of imaging equipment tailored for different applications, including integrated circuits, military aerospace, automotive electronics, and medical diagnostics. With its versatile potential, the technology is expected to play a key role in future technological advancements.
