The annual output of tires at the end of the “Eleventh Five-Year Plan†will reach 300 million and the radialization rate will reach 70%.
On December 19, a reporter learned at the 50th Anniversary celebration of the Beijing Rubber Industry Research and Design Institute and the Rubber Industry Development Forum that China's tire industry is expected to maintain rapid growth over the next five years. By 2010, annual tire production is projected to reach 300 million units, with 210 million being radial tires, achieving a radialization rate of around 70%, and 90 million bias-ply tires making up the remaining 30%. Safety, energy efficiency, and environmental protection are set to become the core focus of future development in the sector.
Over several decades, China’s tire industry has developed a relatively complete industrial system. With annual automobile tire output exceeding 200 million units, it has become the second-largest tire producer globally, following the United States. In recent years, as the automotive industry has grown rapidly, the tire sector has drawn international attention. Between 2000 and 2004, total tire production grew by more than 10% annually, with radial tires seeing even higher growth rates—over 30% on average. However, challenges remain, as the product structure is still not fully optimized, with bias-ply tires dominating the market. The radialization rate is currently just approaching 50%.
Radial tires are known for being 5% to 7% more fuel-efficient than bias-ply tires, offering better safety, energy efficiency, and environmental performance. Looking ahead, China’s car radial tire industry is expected to undergo significant transformation. This includes accelerating the trend toward flatter tire designs, enhancing high-speed performance, and developing specialized radial tires with different functions. Heavy-duty tires are also evolving, moving from medium to heavy and light varieties, including tubeless and wide-base options. Advanced materials are being used to create lighter tires, reducing rolling resistance and improving fuel economy, while also increasing the refurbishment rate of truck radial tires.
Additionally, engineering radial tires have emerged, with faster development progress. Industry experts emphasize that domestic tire companies must invest more in scientific research, continuously update manufacturing technologies, strengthen fundamental theoretical studies, and enhance product testing and experimental research. Establishing an automated production line with independent intellectual property is also crucial. As domestic tire production rises and the need for advanced testing and original innovation grows, the urgency of building a dedicated tire testing facility becomes increasingly evident.
